Ancestor
( Horror )
Published Jul 15, 2010 | Word Count 2086

“The ancestors are out there … you have to believe me.”

Acclaimed author Scott Sigler, New York Times bestselling creator of INFECTED and CONTAGIOUS, offers a chilling tale of what can happen when hubris, greed, and madness drive scientific experimentation past the brink of reason.

Every five minutes, a transplant candidate dies while waiting for a compatible heart, a liver, a kidney. Imagine a technology that could provide those life-saving transplant organs for a nominal fee ... and imagine what a company would do to monopolize that technology.

On a remote island in the Canadian Arctic, PJ Colding leads a group of geneticists who have discovered this holy grail of medicine. By reverse-engineering thousands of animal genomes, Colding's team has dialed back the evolutionary clock and re-created the progenitor of all mammals. The method? Illegal. The result? A computer-engineered living creature, an animal whose organs can be implanted in any person, with no chance of transplant rejection.

There's just one problem: these ancestors are not the docile herd animals that Colding's team envisioned. Instead, the work has given birth to something big, something evil … something very, very hungry.

As creators become prey in an ultimate battle for survival, Colding and the woman he loves must fight to survive — even as government agents close in to shut the project down, and the deep-pocketed company backing this research reveals its own cold-blooded agenda.

This book is one of Scott's best. If you want plenty of action and thrills, mixed in with some sci-fi and horror, then is the book for you. Check Scott's website for more books and FREE stuff! Yes, that's right I said FREE.

I am one of the lucky folks to have read, and own, the original 2007 printing of Scott's ANCESTOR novel. I was a bit skeptic hearing about the new re-written 2010 ANCESTOR novel, but no more. From page one the action starts and is non-stop throughout the novel. Whether it's in the lab, in the air or on the ground, ANCESTOR will keep you turning page after page. The science behind ANCESTOR has been updated to include our latest viral threats, current advances and understanding in the field of Xenotransplantation and cloning as well as the possible consequences of such science, and believe me there are consequences!

The novels characters are all well developed and believable. The characters run the gamut of despicable and brutal, greedy and conniving, unbalanced and genius to very likable and even crassly funny at times. The ANCESTOR project was a project to save lives. But as the novel unfolds you'll find yourself drawn in as the sheer brutal horror of what the ANCESTOR project is truly creating begins developing within the pages. Even through all the brutality and murderous mayhem you will still find a brief, but good chuckle or laugh.

If you are a fan of Scott Sigler's works or just a Sci-Fi horror fan you will find ANCESTOR most entertaining and disturbingly horrific. So with that I say bon appétit, eh!

When I heard the original ANCESTOR podcast 2 years ago, I wasn't the biggest fan of it. So, naturally, my expectations of the revised hardcover version weren't too high.

And of course, Scott delivered. This book easily blows the original completely out of the water, and is by far the best novel I have read all year.

The characters are believable, each with their own personalities and backstories tying them all together. The plot is incredible, backed by real science (that's right, you can actually learn things by reading this novel! Impress your friends with your new knowledge of genetics!). And once it gets going and grabs your attention, it doesn't let go. I started reading it early in the morning one day, and once I got to around page 70 I knew that I was having to have to finish the 400+ page novel before I could sleep that night.

So if you're into horror, thriller, or just want a great read full of scientific facts backed by edge-of-your-seat excitement, Scott Sigler's ANCESTOR is the book for you.

This is one of the best books released this year! I have read dozens of new releases and none of them had the depth of character development, or the ability to draw you in to the plot! A great read!

Instead of a "Must Read", it's more of a "Must Read and then buy 5 copies for your friends to read".

I loved this book when i heard the podcast version two years ago, and it's somehow gotten so much better in the rewrites since then! Scott Sigler blends horror and science in such an amazing, twisted way to create this amazing story of genetic engineering gone horribly wrong.
